FrJWilliamsIt’s been quite an interesting Lent!  Little did we realize when we started our preparation for Easter on Ash Wednesday, with the traditional threefold discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, could we have imagined how the Church itself would be challenged to undergo transformative change as well.

The  retirement of Benedict XV1, and the election of Pope Francis has focused the eyes of the entire world on the Church in a way that could not have been imagined as we set out on our Lenten journey. It’s as if the Holy Spirit was calling us to renewal -from top to bottom! Benedict’s Papal ministry was marked by his focus on the New Evangelization in continuation of the initiative first evoked by John Paul 11, and now echoed by Pope Francis at the beginning of his Papacy. In gratitude we thank Benedict for his ministry and leadership, as his journey takes on a new dimension; and as with joy, hope and anticipation as we journey together into the future under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, into the lived experience of the Gospel in the challenge of the New Evangelization.

As we move into the twenty-first century and the third millennium, since that first Easter morning, the message is the same,  “God Raised Jesus From The Dead; and we have been raised with him to live a new life!

The mystery of what we celebrate today is summed up beautifully in the first two sentences of the Epistle to the Romans, read at the Easter Vigil.  “Brothers and sisters: are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were indeed buried with him through baptism unto death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.”

The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead is at the very heart of our Christian belief; our God is a God of life, and that is exactly what we are offered through baptism.

Jesus Resurrection and his Easter morning appearance to Mary of Magdala invites us to become instruments of evangelization as was Mary herself, as she runs to share with Peter and John what she had seen and heard in her personal encounter with the Risen Lord.

As we celebrate Easter in this “Year of Faith” especially, we are invited to become instruments of the New Evangelization  through our own ENCOUNTER with the Risen Lord, by our WITNESS, our Strong Sense of Personal Testimony, a renewed sense of belonging to, and active participation in the lived experience of the Church COMMUNITY and it’s sacramental life, and responding to the Lord’s invitation to be(come) my DISCIPLES.

The Easter proclamation from the Vigil service, that great hymn of rejoicing is our collective response of Easter joy, “Exult all creation around God’s throne! Jesus Christ our King is Risen!…Rejoice, O Earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever!…The Risen Saviour shines upon you.

He is Risen Alleluia, Alleluia!  Happy Easter

PopeJust before noon in Rome on Monday, February 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI told his gathered Consistory that he had made an important decision. The decision: to announce his resignation. There has been immediate reaction from all parts of the globe.  In a letter to the clergy Monday morning, Archbishop Mancini stated: “It has taken us all by surprise since there have been no resignations from the Papacy in 600 years.”

Archbishop Mancini invites all Catholics to keep the Pope in their prayers. There is no doubt that this was a difficult decision for the Holy Father. As Pope Benedict expressed in his official announcement, “to govern the barque of St. Peter and proclaim the gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”

This unprecedented move has left many in shock and stunned silence. However, it has also given rise to the question: what does this mean for the Church? No simple answers can be given. Archbishop Mancini has said that the legacy left by Pope Benedict XVI can be seen in his theological writings, his acknowledgement and efforts towards reconciliation regarding the sexual abuse crisis, and most recently his call to the New Evangelization.

Another question being asked by many is: what happens next? The Pope’s resignation takes effect on February 28, 2013 at 8:00pm (Central European Time). At that time the standard procedures for the election of a Pope will come into effect. What makes this election different is that the departing pope has not actually departed. Further questions include: What title does one use for a retired pope? Where will he live? What role, if any, will he play in the life of the Church when his successor is elected? Archbishop Mancini has said that new procedures and guidelines will have to be explored to deal with this new situation. The Church has not been in this situation in the modern culture and context of our present world.

It seems rather appropriate that in this Year of Faith, the faithful are being called to rely on the gift of faith to see them through this experience that is so new and different.  On behalf of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, Archbishop Mancini expressed gratitude for the service of Pope Benedict XVI and wished him well in his retirement—a statement which we are not yet accustomed to making. The archbishop ended his letter to the clergy with this simple but important prayer: “We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us and may the Spirit inspire the Cardinals who will soon be electing Pope Benedict’s successor.”

hands_with_knitting_needles_lg_clrIntroducing a New Ministry for our Parishes – Prayer Shawls or Lap Robes:  What is a Prayer Shawl Ministry? People who knit or crochet pray as they make shawls/lap robes for people who need comfort during illness, recuperation, time of loneliness or mourning etc. Purpose: To share with our parishioners and community who are in need of prayers, comfort and outward signs of our support as a parish family. The shawls/lap robes offer tangible evidence of support, hope, love and comfort to those who we are praying for. How it works: a prayer for the future recipient is said before, during and after the project is made. Then before they are freely given out, they will be blessed by a Priest. They then become a true Sacramental. If you can knit, crochet or would like to learn how to make these very easy patterns or if you are interested in helping out by donating yarn etc., contact Anita MacDonald at 454-5131 or e-mail
